Bahama Llamas is a family farm located in Franklin County, Virginia near the Smith Mountain Lake resort area. We decided to name our farm Bahama Llamas cause it is FUN and easy to remember. We also like to go to the Bahamas! Our introduction to llamas began in 2000. After living on Smith Mountain Lake for 14 years we decided to sell our waterfront home and get back to the lifestyle we grew up with. We wanted our children to grow up with animals and chores like us, except milking a cow!

Our primary goal in the llama business is to always breed for the best llama possible: conformation, disposition, fiber and overall appeal.  We love fine fibered silky type llamas and have selected llamas for our breeding program to produce this.   Our breeding females and herd sires have bloodlines from top herd sires and proven females from reputable breeders all over the country.   We maintain 20 to 25 breeding females and 3 or 4 herd sires.

Bahama Llama Farm    We found 12 acres with an old farm house, which is a work in progress, and a BARN.   Since Ken is a building contractor, remodeling is not that much of a problem.  Since he is an ARTIST I can count on creativity!   We both grew up on family farms and have first hand knowledge of raising livestock.  Ken’s family had a cattle operation and my family raised tobacco and acres of hay, oats, corn and wheat for our commercial calf operation.  Our combined love of animals and knowledge allows us to be our own farm managers.  Also being a full time REALTOR does give me a flexible schedule.  And finally I am “using “ my college degree- Animal Science from  Va Tech.

The llamas came in 2001.  All 40 of them!  Guess you could say we rescued them because the retired couple who owned them was unable to care for them properly.  We had our work cut out for us and learned a lot fast and some the hard way.  After 2 years of careful evaluation we selected our keepers and found homes for the others.
